Meadow Street Proposals presented to Places Matter
November 5th, 2010 by Tim Riley
On 22nd October 2010, our proposals for Meadow Street, Preston were presented to Places Matter at the RIBA NW offices in Liverpool for a peer review.
The review was particularly constructive as we were able to have a positive and critical dialogue about the our proposals. This service was provided free of charge and we would encourage all major applications to make use of this great resource.
The panel were very supportive and applauded the clarity of the scheme and its bold use of materials stating…
‘We commend your approach and are very positive about the brief and the resulting scheme’
There were a few particular issues were discussed at length, namely…
- The panel felt that the Meadow Street frontage (stepped frontage presented) needed more development and as a direct result, the design team has since improved this frontage with more activity and a clearer defensible zone.
- The panel also suggested that the St. Ignatius Mews need not be straight to create a threshold into the Homezone. This was investigated further but was found to be unfeasible due to parking requirements. It was also felt by the design team that the axis of St. Ignatius Church transept was a strong feature worth retaining and the urban block would have more clarity with a straight edge to St. Ignatius Mews.
- The panel suggested the opening up of the Homezone to create a connection with St. Ignatius Church but it was explained that this would meet with objection from local residents due to concerns over crime in the area. For this reason the existing wall is retained but this issue may be revisited in the future with local support.
Amendments to the scheme were incorporated into the planning proposals submitted on 25th November 2010.
